Kirby Yates struck out the side in the ninth for his 12th save, capping a dominating run by the San Diego bullpen, which carried the Padres to their 10th-straight victory, 2-1, on Friday night over the Chicago Cubs at Petco Park.
Craig Stammen struck out both batters he faced in the seventh, and Emilio Pagan struck out the side in the eighth prior to Yates’ heroics. In all, the final eight Cubs went down swinging as San Diego held on after Anthony Rizzo’s solo homer in the seventh had cut the Padres’ lead to 2-1.
Zach Davies picked up the win for San Diego, which improved to 25-20 and has allowed just 15 runs total during its 10-game winning streak. Feranando Tatis Jr. hit a two-run home run in the first inning to account for all of the scoring the Padres would need.
Kyle Hendricks was the hard-luck loser for Chicago, allowing only four hits and striking out seven.
