Tatis Drives In Five As Padres Blast Cubs, 14-1, For Ninth Straight

97.3 The Fan

Fernando Tatis Jr. led an 11-hit attack with a pair of two-run singles and five RBIs in all as the San Diego Padres continued to roll Thursday night, blasting the Chicago Cubs, 14-1, for their ninth consecutive victory. It was the first time this season that San Diego has put up double-figures in the runs column.

Tatis had three hits, while both Tommy Pham and Manny Machado had two hits and drove in two runs. Will Myers also knocked in two for San Diego (24-20). The Padres put up their highest-scoring output of the season without the aid of a home run and only two extra-base hits (both doubles). San Diego took advantage of nine walks by the Cubs’ pitching staff.

Jose Quintana walked three in four innings and gave up eight runs, including four in the first. Tatis’ first two-run single was the key hit in that rally, and he came through another two-run single in the second. Myers’ two-run double made it 8-0 and chased Quintana in the fourth.

Joey Lucchesi was solid for six innings, allowing just one run and striking out five to improve his record to 4-2. The Padres put the game completely away with six more runs in the seventh. They were the beneficiary of six walks in that inning alone, plus a pair of sacrifice flies.
