Aztecs' Defense Shines in Win Over San Jose State

SDSU wins 4th straight game, maintains sole possession of first place in Mountain West standings

The San Diego State Aztecs beat the San Jose State Spartans 72-51 on Saturday evening at Viejas Arena. The Aztecs have won four straight games, and remain in sole possession of first place in the Mountain West standings with an 8-1 record in conference play.

The Aztecs were dominant in the first half, building a 33-14 at the intermission. San Diego State led 12-11 after just more than seven minutes of play, but then proceeded to go on a 21-3 over a 12-minute span to close the opening half.


Keshad Johnson scored 12 points in the first half, while San Diego State's defense held the Spartans to just 21% shooting as a team. The Aztecs also forced 10 turnovers in the half. San Jose finished the game shooting 35% from the floor and 21% (4-for-19) from three-point range.

San Diego State's largest was 27 points in the second half. The Spartans cut the lead to 11 points at the 5:31 mark of the half, but would never get the Aztecs' lead down to single digits.

Johnson finished with a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Matt Bradley scored 14 points, while the Aztecs shot 47% from the floor and 31% on three-pointers. San Diego State shot just 59% (13-for-22) at the free throw line.

San Diego State turned the ball over just three times, while the Spartans had 13 turnovers. The Aztecs had 16 points off turnovers and outscored San Jose State 24-6 in the paint during the first half.

The Aztecs continue conference play at Nevada on Tuesday night. Opening tip is at 8 p.m.
