If at any point over the coming days (or perhaps weeks) the Green Bay Packers sound like they’re desperately trying to keep Aaron Rodgers, we’ll know why.
The Packers seemed to have a fully fleshed-out plan two years ago at the draft. They would select Jordan Love, who they moved up to get, and he’d learn from Rodgers for a year or two. At that point, Rodgers would either retire or play somewhere else.

That plan got turned upside down when Rodgers delivered two MVP-caliber seasons. Now, he’s under contract through next season at a huge cap hit, and very well might force a trade somewhere else.
Such a reality wouldn’t be as big of problem if Rodgers had regressed as they expected. Making matters far worse though, Rich Eisen shared on “The Rich Eisen Show” that he heard many times at the NFL combine last week that the Packers aren’t in love with their soon-to-be third-year quarterback.
“Not only is (Rodgers) at the top of his game, they’ve already seen Jordan Love’s game and know he ain’t the guy,” Eisen said. “Heard that one. A lot. Are they right? Are the whisperers right? I don’t know.”
If that’s indeed the case and Love is looking like a bust, then the Packers will need to try like hell to keep Rodgers. The free agent market for quarterbacks this offseason is not great, so they’d basically have to hope they could swing a trade for someone like Russell Wilson, which seems unlikely.
Losing Rodgers, having a tough cap situation and turning things over to a potentially bad young quarterback could send Green Bay firmly into the throes of a rebuild.
