The Padres lost a heartbreaker on Monday night, blowing a 2-run lead in the 9th inning and losing 9-5 to the Angels. Michael King was effective, and struck out 8 over 5 2/3 innings while allowing 3 runs (2 earned). Jackson Merrill made a spectacular diving catch with runners on the corners and 2 outs to preserve the Padres 4-3 lead in the 7th inning. The Padres added to their 1-run lead in the 8th inning, adding an insurance run when Xander Bogaerts hit a sacrifice-fly to bring in Jackson Merrill after he ripped a triple down the first base line.

Things took a turn for the worse in the top of the 9th inning. After Robert Suarez struck out Matthew Lugo to begin the inning, he surrendered a single to Luis Rengifo, and then issued four consecutive walks, bringing in two runs to tie the game at 5. Alek Jacob then entered the game with the bases loaded and one out. After striking out Jorge Soler, Jacob was one strike away from escaping the bases loaded jam, but Taylor Ward hit a 2-strike 2-out grand slam into the left field seats to seal the comeback and give the Angels a 9-5 win. The Padres will try to regroup with Dylan Cease drawing the start on Tuesday.
