The Padres scored 7 runs on 13 hits with two home runs, and went 2-8 with runners in scoring position on Tuesday against the Cubs, but it wasn't enough, as they lost 9-7. JP Sears was hit hard, allowing 7 runs (6 earned) on 8 hits and 3 walks in 4.2 innings of work. Sears was spotted a 1-0 lead before throwing a pitch after Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a leadoff home run to begin the game, but Carson Kelly tied the game with an RBI-single in the bottom of the 1st inning. Sears ran into trouble in the 2nd inning, giving up 4 runs on four hits and a walk, including two long balls. Trailing 9-3 in the top of the 8th inning, Gavin Sheets hit a 3-run homer, and Tatis Jr. added his second home run of the game, a solo shot to right center, to bring the Padres to within two runs of the Cubs. After Samad Taylor drew a two-out walk, Manny Machado came to the plate representing the tying run after the Padres trailed by as many as six runs, but he struck out to end the inning. The Padres were retired in order in the 9th inning to end the game, and will try to avoid being swept in Wednesday's series finale.
