Nick Martinez was one of the final dominos to fall for the Padres, as he faced a Thursday deadline of whether to opt into or out of his player option for the 2023 season for a salary of $6.5 million. The Padres announced Thursday afternoon that Martinez did in fact opt out, making him a free agent. Martinez did it all for the Padres in 2022, being used as a spot starter and turning into one of Bob Melvin's most trusted high-leverage relievers. Martinez had a 3.47 ERA and struck out just under one hitter per inning in 2022.
