The Padres took down the Giants 1-0 in 10 innings on Monday night, in a game that featured great pitching and even better defense. Logan Webb hurled 8 shutout frames for the Giants, while Stephen Kolek didn't allow a run in 5.2 innings of work. Jose Iglesias was the star of the game for the Padres, filling in at third base for Manny Machado, who got the night off his feet as the DH.
In the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Giants had the bases loaded and no outs, and Jose Iglesias fielded a grounder to third and made a tough throw home to save a run. On the very next play, he started an inning-ending double play on a slow roller to get out of the bases loaded no-out jam without allowing a run. Fast forward to the top of the 10th inning, and Iglesias stepped to the plate with a runner on 3rd base and 1 out after Tyler Wade advanced the leadoff runner with a sac-bunt. Iglesias hit a fly ball to deep enough left to bring home the first run of the game. Mike Shildt opted to bring Robert Suarez back out for a second inning of work in the bottom of the 10th. The Giants mimicked the Padres' strategy, laying down a sac-bunt to advance the leadoff runner, and Iglesias made a tremendous play to charge the ball and throw it across the diamond for the first out. He then made an outrageous scoop on a grounder from Chapman with an exit velocity of 109.7 to save the game-tying run and get the 2nd out of the inning. Suarez then got Jerar Encarnacion to lineout to Luis Arraez at first base on a 101 mph liner to end the game and take down the Giants 1-0. Ryan Bergert will start Tuesday's game against the Giants.
