The Padres lost Friday's series opener against the Red Sox at Fenway 5-2. After falling behind 2-0, the Padres battled back to tie the game at 2-2, with Gavin Sheets and Luis Campusano both driving in runs in the 5th inning. Willson Contreras tagged Michael King for a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the 6th, and then with 2 outs and a man on, Craig Stammen brought in lefty Wandy Peralta to face left-handed hitter Marcelo Mayer, who hit a 2-run homer on the first pitch he saw to give the Red Sox a 5-2 lead that they would hold on to for the rest of the game. Randy Vasquez will start for the Padres on Saturday.
