The Padres played in another one-run game in Wednesday's series finale against the Marlins, but lost 3-2 to drop the series two games to one, as the Marlins' continue to be one of the hottest teams in baseball. Sandy Alcantara found his former Cy Young form, allowing just one unearned runs in 7 innings of work. Dylan Cease escaped a first inning jam allowing just one run in the first inning, and then dialed in for the next three innings. But the big blow in the game came when Jesus Sanchez hit a 2-run homer off of Cease in the 5th inning, which proved to be the game's decisive runs.
The Padres had a chance to get back in the game in the 8th inning, when Jackson Merrill led off the inning with a double. Jose Iglesias brought Merrill home with a single to right field, making it a 3-2 game. Fernando Tatis Jr. then singled to right with 2 outs, putting the tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead run on base, but Luis Arraez lined out to center field to end the threat. The Padres now head to St. Louis for a four-game set with NL wild card implications.
