The Padres' undefeated start to the 2025 season extended with a 1-0 win over the Braves on Saturday night. This game was a pitcher's duel, with Randy Vasquez and Spencer Schwellenbach matching each other with six shutout innings apiece. Manny Machado exited the game in the bottom of the 4th inning with what was termed right calf tightness. After the game, Mike Shildt said the injury wasn't serious, and Machado is considered day-to-day. The game's lone run came in the 7th inning in an unlikely situation. After the first two batters of the inning struck out, Jake Cronenworth hit a ground rule double to reach scoring position. Xander Bogaerts was then intentionally walked, and Mike Shildt opted to bring in Yuli Gurriel to pinch-hit for Opening Day's hero, Gavin Sheets. Brian Snitker countered by bringing in right-handed pitcher Daysbel Hernandez, and Gurriel won the battle, delivering an RBI-single that proved to be the difference in the game. The Braves were able to get the game-tying run to third base in the 9th inning, but Adrian Morejon struck out Drake Baldwin to end the game. The Padres improved to 3-0 to begin the season, and will go for the 4-game sweep on Sunday.
