The Padres lost their second consecutive one-run game to the Giants with a 3-2 loss on Thursday afternoon. Giants starter Robbie Ray stifled the Padres for most of the afternoon, striking out 9 and allowing just 4 hits in 7 innings, but he did allow a 2-run homer to Manny Machado in the 3rd inning, the 350th of his illustrious career. The Padres were unable to protect that lead however. In the bottom of the 3rd, Willy Adames drove in a run with a sac-fly and Dominic Smith put the Giants on top with a 2-run double. There was a scary moment in the 5th inning when Dylan Cease took a hard comebacker off what appeared to be his pitching elbow on a rocket off the bat of Matt Chapman. Cease would stay in the game and get the final out of the inning, but wouldn't return for the 6th inning.

The Padres had a chance to tie the game or even take the lead in the top of the 9th inning against erratic closer Camilo Doval. Manny Machado led-off the inning with a single to right field. After Jackson Merrill flew out, Gavin Sheets ripped a single to right, putting the tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead run on the basepaths. But Jose Iglesias grounded out to shortstop and then Jake Cronenworth struck out to end the game. The Padres and Giants would split the series 2-2 in a set of games where either team could have and perhaps even should have won each game. The Padres begin a series against the Brewers in Milwaukee on Friday.
