Wednesday began with news that the Padres locked up their young superstar Jackson Merrill to a longterm deal. The day got even better from there, as the club's historic start to the season continued with a 5-2 win over the Guardians, improving their record to 7-0 with consecutive sweeps to begin the season.
Dylan Cease pitched well, striking out 7 while allowing just 1 run in 6.1 innings of work. The Padres notched their first run in the 3rd inning when Fernando Tatis Jr. stole home on a double steal. Luis Arraez then scored on the next play on a scoring error from Jose Ramirez and Jackson Merrill pretty much put the nail in the coffin with a 2-run homer to make it a 4-0 game. The Guardians scored on a groundout in the top of the 7th to pull to within 3, but Luis Arraez blasted his first longball of the season in the next inning to give the Padres a 4-run cushion again. Cleveland scored on a sac-fly in the 8th to give Robert Suarez a save situation in the 9th, and he tossed a perfect inning to secure his 3rd save of the season. The Padres will have a day off on Thursday before putting their undefeated record back on the line against the Cubs on Friday.
