The Padres dropped Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader 6-4 to the Diamondbacks. Matt Waldron was called upon to start, and allowed 5 earned runs in 5 innings, including a 2-run homer to Tommy Pham to break a 3-3 tie. Manny Machado's second home run of the game was of the solo variety in the 8th to make it a 6-4 game. The Padres rallied in the bottom of the 9th, loading the bases with two outs for Juan Soto, who hit a deep fly ball to left field that was caught at the warning track to end the game.
Game 2 didn't go any better for the Friars, as Yu Darvish struggled, needing 104 pitches to make it through 5 innings while allowing 4 runs on 9 hits plus a walk. The Padres only collected just 5 hits, with the lone run coming on a solo homer by Xander Bogaerts with the Padres trailing 3-0 in the 5th inning. The Padres kept things within striking distance until the 7th inning, when Gabriel Moreno hit a grand slam off of Nick Martinez to give the Diamondbacks an 8-1 lead, which would ultimately be the final score. The Padres will be off on Sunday before the Marlins arrive on Monday.
