The Padres opened their series in Miami against the Marlins with a 2-1 victory, continuing their trend of playing in close games. San Diego did all of their damage in the 2nd inning, scoring the game's first run on an RBI-single by Jackson Merrill, who returned to the starting lineup after sitting out Sunday's game with an illness. Merrill then came all the way around to score from first on a double from Martin Maldonado, running through the stop sign of third base coach Tim Leiper and diving head first to beat the throw home. Kyle Stowers' All-Star season continued, as he hit a solo homer to center off of Randy Vasquez, but Merrill's run proved to be the decisive score. Vasquez allowed 7 hits and a walk, causing Mike Shildt to go to his vaunted bullpen with one out in the 5th inning, and the Four Horsemen delivered. Adrian Morejon pitched 1.2 perfect innings, and he, Jeremiah Estrada, Jason Adam and Robert Suarez combined to allow just two hits over 4.2 scoreless frames. After returning to the Padres earlier in the day, Stephen Kolek will reportedly draw the start on Tuesday.
