According to a report in The Athletic, the Padres have granted the Giants permission to interview Bob Melvin for their vacant managerial position. The report indicates that Melvin is a leading candidate for the position, something he reportedly required in order to participate in their job search. Earlier this month, AJ Preller announced that Bob Melvin would return as manager of the Padres for the final year of his contract. Bob Melvin confirmed the news to the Associated Press. But Melvin's absence from the team's end-of-season press conference and not speaking publicly since the end of the season, along with reports of the Giants' interest, had fueled continued speculation that Melvin could ultimately be hired by the Giants.
There has been speculation about Melvin's future with the Padres since reports during the season of friction between Melvin and Preller. Melvin was born in the Bay Area, played for the Giants as a player for several seasons, and has connections to their current President of Baseball Operations, Farhan Zaidi.
