The Padres' offense struggled once again, as the Rockies came out on top 4-2 on Friday night. JP Sears made his first start since being recalled from the minors, and cruised through the first three innings, allowing just one baserunner. But he ran into trouble in the 4th inning, giving up back-to-back home runs, one of which was of the 3-run variety to rookie Blaine Crim, which was the first hit of his career. That would be all the offense the Rockies would need. After Manny Machado homered in the 1st inning, the Padres wouldn't threaten again until late in the game. In both the 7th and 8th innings, the Padres had runners on 1st and 2nd base with no outs while trailing 4-1, and weren't able to score in either inning. After Luis Arraez flew out to begin the bottom of the 9th inning, Manny Machado singled the other way, and Gavin Sheets ripped a double down the right field line, bringing the tying run to the plate. Ramon Laureano grounded out to second base, bringing in Machado from third base, before Jackson Merrill drew a walk, which brought the go-ahead run to the plate. But Ryan O'Hearn struck out to end the game, as the Padres dropped to 80-68 on the season.
