The Padres ended their 4-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Cardinals on Saturday night in a game where tempers flared and the benches cleared for the second straight night. Randy Vasquez pitched well again, allowing just one run in 4.2 innings, before Mike Shildt aggressively went to his bullpen to bring in Adrian Morejon to face left-handed hitting Victor Scott, with two of the next three hitters after him also being left-handed. The Padres played small-ball effectively, scoring their second run on a safety squeeze in the 4th inning from Bryce Johnson, and then scoring their third run of the game in the 9th inning after Johnson advanced to third on a sac-bunt from Martin Maldonado following his leadoff double. Fernando Tatis Jr. then brought Johnson home on a groundout to shortstop, showing how positive things can happen when you put the ball in play.
After being hit by a pitch in the 5th inning, Manny Machado was hit again in the 9th inning, and he was visibly frustrated, and let the home plate umpire know he didn't appreciate being hit for a second time. This comes on the heels of Willson Contreras being hit the night before and taking exception with it. The benches cleared for the second straight night, and Machado got into a shouting match with Cardinals assistant coach Jon Jay. The two have a history that dates back many years. Mike Shildt said after the game that he didn't think anyone was hit intentionally, and that the feud was over as far as he was concerned. Machado had pointed words for Jay in his postgame comments, which you can hear below. The Padres will need a win on Sunday to split the four-game series. Stephen Kolek will start for the Friars.
