San Diego State lost its second consecutive game on Saturday night, falling 31-10 to the Cal Bears. Danny O'Neil was unable to play due to a knee injury, so Javance Tupou'ata-Johnson drew his first career start under center. Tupou'ata-Johnson would finish the game just 13-29 for 156 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He averaged just 5.4 yards per attempt. This matchup was close at halftime, with the Bears leading a defensive bout 7-3. But Cal would come out in the second half ready to play, and scored two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter to go up 21-3. They added a field goal early in the 4th to go up by 21. Tupou'ata-Johnson threw a 40 yard touchdown to Jordan Napier to draw the Aztecs within two scores, but Cal QB Fernando Mendoza would lead his team to their third touchdown of the second half, creating a margin that was too much to overcome. The real story of the game was the difference in the two team's success on the ground, with Cal outgaining SDSU 275 to 110. The Aztecs will have a bye week to regroup and make adjustments before traveling to face Central Michigan in two weeks.
