San Diego State lost a heartbreaker to Utah State, 32-24 in double overtime. This was a low-scoring affair for the majority of the game, with SDSU leading 7-3 at the half. The Aggies took a 10-7 lead midway through the 3rd quarter thanks to a 50 yard touchdown catch by Jalen Royals. Davon Booth would add a 19 yard touchdown run early in the 4th to put Utah State up by 10. Mayden would lead a 9-play 79 yard scoring drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kenon Christon. After the Aggies and Aztecs alternated three straight drives ending in punts, SDSU got the ball back with 2:27 remaining and trailing by 3 points. From the 12 yard line, Mayden missed a wide open man in the end zone, sailing the ball over his head for what would have been the go-ahead touchdown. SDSU would settle for a game-tying field goal to send the game to overtime.
The Aztecs received the ball first in overtime, and scored easily on a beautiful touchdown pass by Mayden. Head coach Brady Hoke opted to kick the extra point, giving them a 7-point lead. Utah State tied the game with a touchdown pass of their own, sending the game to a second overtime. The Aggies would take the ball first, and Robert Briggs busted a touchdown run to give the lead back to Utah State. The Aggies ran a tricky reverse pass on the mandatory 2-point try, which was successful, putting them up by 8. The Aztecs had trouble moving the ball, and Mayden would throw a game-sealing interception on 4th down to hand the Aztecs their 6th loss in 7 games, dropping them to 3-6 on the season. San Diego State will travel to Colorado State next Saturday.
