GCS Lifelong Learning at Sullivan Center on Wilkins Street, is an official GED Testing Center. A GED gives adults who did not graduate from high school the opportunity to gain a high school equivalency diploma and be better prepared for college or the workforce.
Practice tests are available through GED.com in math, science, social studies and reading/language arts. Each costs $6, but students enrolled in the GCS program can get free practice tests and even receive career path help after the GED is completed. Students see if they are ready to take the GED Test by taking the GED Ready Practice on their own schedule 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
More than 17 million people have received a GED Credential since the program began in 1943. Only those who have not earned a high school diploma may take the GED tests. The GED Tests include five subject area tests: Language Arts/Writing, Language Arts/Reading, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics. In addition to English, the GED tests are available in Spanish, French, large print, audiocassette and Braille. Many government institutions and some 97% of colleges and employers regard the GED as the same as a high school diploma. In fact, some colleges and universities also offer college credit based on an applicant’s GED score. The GED Test Center reports that on average, GED graduates earn $9,000 more per year than non-graduates.
The GED Test, redesigned in 2014, is aligned with the same standards that are required for a South Carolina high school diploma. The GED Test is given online and is made up of the four subject tests. They do not have to be taken at the same time. Each subject test costs $37.50.
