Spartanburg City Council is formally acknowledging "systemic racism" in the city's history, apologizing for it and pledging to guard against it from now on.

A resolution  introduced by Mayor June White at last night's session concedes racism in some of the city's policies in the 1950s and 60s on  housing, employment and individual rights.

It calls for "healing, reconciling, unity and a pathway  to a more equitable Spartanburg."

Council members were asked to signify their approval by standing.

It passed unanimously.
