Vermont Senator and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders made a pit stop to the Palmetto State this week, focusing most of his energy on attacking President Trump, sounding the alarm bell on climate change, and touting poll numbers which show him defeating Trump in a 2020 showdown.

At a town hall event in Myrtle Beach, Sanders first called attention to the wildfires currently raging across Brazil in the Amazon rain forest.

“What they are doing is unbelievable,” Sanders told the crowd that had gathered. “You all are well aware of that. They’re in the process of burning the rain forest, which are the lungs of our entire planet.”

Sanders was addressing the widespread practice of deforestation through fire that has been common under Brazil’s new government, led by right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro.

Sanders then pivoted to the 2020 race, telling the crowd his campaign is locked in on victory against President Trump, whom he dubbed “dangerous.”

“It is a campaign that is going to win the Democratic nomination,” Sanders said. “And is it a campaign with your help that is going to defeat the most dangerous president in the modern history of this country.”

The next day, in Georgetown, SC, Sanders held a community breakfast, where he doubled down on his prediction of victory against Trump.

“Every national credible poll done in the last year has me defeating Trump, often by a whole lot of points,” Sanders said.

According to a recent Quinnipiac poll, Trump does trail behind not only Sanders, but also Former Vice President Joe Biden, Senators Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren, and Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

Worth noting, however, is that President Trump was trailing Hillary Clinton by similar numbers in the polls leading up to his victory in 2016.
