The driver of a 1997 Ford SUV was killed in a crash Tuesday on East Jerry Road in Laurens County.
Trooper Joe Hovis with the South Carolina Highway Patrol says a passenger in the vehicle suffered serious injuries and had to be flown to the hospital.
The driver, identified by the Coroner as 22 year old Michael Shockley, was heading North on East Jerry Road when around 3:44pm veered right off the roadway and crashed into a tree.
Both Shockley and the passenger were entrapped and had to be mechanically extracted.
Neither were wearing a seatbelt.
Shockley died at the scene. The passenger was taken to Spartanburg Regional by helicopter.
As of right now, there is no word on the passengers condition.
The cause of the crash is unknown at this time.
