Legionnaire's Outbreak Linked to NC Fair

Health officials are urging anyone who attended the 2019 North Carolina Mountain State Fair to closely keep a look out for any symptoms of Legionaries disease.

This alert comes as more than 80 cases of the disease have been reported across North and South Carolina, which have been linked to attendance of that fair.

The fair was held in Fletcher, North Carolina from September 6th through the 15th.

Most cases of the disease have occurred in Bumcombe and Henderson Counties.

Symptoms of the disease include coughing, fever, shortness of breath, muscle pains, or headaches. Legionnaire’s is a form of atypical pneumonia caused by any type of Legionella bacteria.

Onset of the disease usually occurs within a few days to a couple weeks after exposure.

Health officials are now asking that anyone who attended the North Carolina Mountain State Fair to please take a confidential survey online, even if they didn’t get sick. The information, they say, will help them better understand the outbreak and could help them prevent similar outbreaks in the future.
