The Woodlands at Furman, the state's sole university-based retirement community, held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday afternoon to celebrate the start of a multi-million dollar expansion project.
The project is a collaborative effort on many parts, as Mary Lou Merkt, the president of The Woodlands at Furman, said in her long list of thanks at the ceremony.
"We want to address the need for really quality senior housing for the baby boomers that are ageing at this point in time," Merkt said. "And at the same time, we want to be able to provide even more ammenities for the residents who are here."
These expansions include moer housing, a new pool, community center, fitness center, a salon and new state of the art dining facilities.
Merkt said the project will begin work on Monday, February 3rd and is projected to take roughly 18 months, finishing and opening the new facilities in the summer of 2021.
