Three Idaho National Guard troops were killed Tuesday night when their UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed south of Lucky Peak near Boise shortly after 8 p.m., Guard officials announced.

All three were pilots participating in a routine training flight.

“This is a tremendous loss to the Idaho National Guard and our community,” Maj. Gen. Michael Garshak, adjutant general of Idaho and commander of the Idaho National Guard, said in a Facebook post on Wednesday morning. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones as we work through this tragedy.”

The aircraft was last in communication at 7:45 p.m Tuesday evening. The Emergency Transmitter Locator device aboard the aircraft was activated shortly after 8 p.m. and the aircraft was located by recovery teams at 12:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

The cause of the accident is unknown and an investigation will begin promptly.

The names of those killed in the crash are currently being withheld pending notification of next of kin according to Department of Defense policy.

The Idaho Guard crash comes just weeks after three National Guard members were killed in another helicopter crash -- again while conducting a training exercise.

The Jan. 20 crash also involved a UH-60 Black Hawk. The medical evacuation helicopter crashed in a farmer's field in rural Mendon, south of Rochester, around 6:30 p.m. on a Wednesday evening. There were no survivors.
