Former Vice President Mike Pence underwent surgery in a Virginia hospital on Wednesday to get a pacemaker implanted.
Doctors recommended the surgery after the 61-year-old Pence experienced symptoms associated with a slow heart rate over the past two weeks.
The routine surgery was conducted at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Falls Church and was successful.
"He is expected to fully recover and return to normal activity in the coming days," the former vice president's office said in a statement.
"I am grateful for the swift professionalism and care of the outstanding doctors, nurses and staff at Inova Heart and Vascular Institute," Pence said in the statement. "My family has been truly blessed by the work of these dedicate healthcare professionals."
In 2016, Pence disclosed his medical history, including a diagnosis of asymptomatic left bundle branch block.
The former vice president has kept a relatively low profile since leaving office.
He announced last week that a currently untitled autobiography is scheduled to come out in 2023 and also launched an advocacy group, Advancing American Freedom, to promote the Trump administration's accomplishments.
All of this could be leading to a potential 2024 presidential bid.
