(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The presidential library and museum honoring Barack Obama has taken a notable step forward in Chicago.

The Obama Presidential Foundation on Wednesday announced that the first infrastructure work in and around Jackson Park is now scheduled to begin in April. Groundbreaking currently is set for early fall.

A federal review and legal challenges to the use of the Jackson Park site tied up development of the property for years.

"Chicago is now officially the home of the presidential center for our country’s first Black president," Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a prepared statement. "The Obama Presidential Center and nearby capital improvement projects will undoubtedly distinguish our city's historic South Side as a world-class economic and cultural hub. “

Once begun, the presidential center is expected to take four years to complete.
