Local activists held a press conference today in light of the law enforcement shooting of Daunte Wright in Minnesota yesterday afternoon.

Bruce Wilson and Derrick Quarles of Black Lives Matter Greenville spoke Wright's death and about the trial of Derek Chauvin, which is being held just miles from where Wright was shot.

Quarles and Wilson report they intend to hold a rally in honor of George Floyd and protests as needed throughout the summer.

Wilson said those who stand against violence have to get involved and make their voice heard.

"You cannot preach from the porch," Wilson said.  "You cannot be silent because that is complicit in allowing what happens to happen."

Wilson also noted that law enforcement handled January 6th, the day of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, differently from instances that led to the deaths of George Floyd, Daunte Wright, Eric Garner, and many more.

"We saw on January 6th that officers are able to control themselves," Wilson said.  "Treat all of us the same; that's what we're asking.  If you're going to be brutal to us, be brutal to them.  If you're going to treat them like somebody, start treating us like somebody."
