City officials are celebrating Monday night's adoption of the massive and sometimes controversial, new Greenville Development Code. Opposition voices were virtually drowned out by a groundswell of support for the plan intended to control Greenville's growth through the end of the decade.
During a four-hour session more than forty residents went to the podium to urge first reading passage of the resolution, only nine opponents dissented, calling for more discussion and deliberation.
Supporters say the combination of rules and zoning code revisions ,which was unanimously approved by the City Planning Commission, is the long-awaited solution to a confusing patchwork of regulations. A combination that sometimes baffled developers and city officials alike.
There will be an emphasis on affordable housing, and the city is hiring its first Chief Diversity Officer whose functions will include monitoring the so-called Special Emphasis Neighborhoods plan.
