Controversial former politician from the LowCountry dies at the age of 86

A controversial former politician from South Carolina's Low Country has died at the age of 86. John Jenrette died Friday, according to an obituary from Goldfinch Funeral Home in Conway.

Jenrette is a Loris Native who served in the State House before being elected to the U.S. Congress in 1974. The Democrat served three terms in the U.S. House. He later served time in prison as part of a bribery scandal. Jenrette was recorded by the FBI taking a $50,000 bribe. He was convicted and served just over a year in prison.

After his release, Jenrette helped tobacco companies get their products on the market in Eastern Europe. He also bred horses in Bulgaria, before settling back in the Low Country. Jenrette's life was chronicled in a book titled "Capitol Steps and Missteps".
