The man who pleaded guilty to killing a teenage girl in North Carolina has been accused of trying to escape custody twice. Officials say Michael McLellan pleaded guilty to the 2018 murder of a 13 year old.
The Robeson County Sheriff's Office says McLellan tried to escape both on the way to court and afterwards while being taken to prison.
Officials say while on the way to court on I-40 McLellan was moving around in the backseat. Officers stopped and discovered that he had removed his leg restraints and had a homemade key in the handcuffs. Officers then re-applied the restraints.
Then after pleading guilty and being transported to prison McLellan got loose from his cuffs with another homemade key. He was able to get an officers gun while going down I-40. The officer driving then slammed on the brakes and caused the officer in the vehicle to hit the transport vehicle.
The Highway Patrol and local deputies rushed to scene to help and McLellan's plot was foiled.
