Friday, South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) agents arrested a Pickens County restaurant owner and charged him with two counts of tax evasion. William Alexander, Jr., 75, of Greenville County, is the owner and operator of Pumpkintown Café in Pickens County.

According to SCDOR agents, Alexander underreported taxable sales on monthly Sales Tax returns filed from January 2018 through July 2019, failing to report a total of over $250,000 in taxable sales and evading payment of nearly $19,000 in Sales Tax due to the state. earing.

Agents also arrested a Cherokee County business owner Thursday on three tax evasion charges. Saleh Nagi Ayedh, 31, of Cherokee County, is the owner and operator of Fredrick Vape & Tobacco in Gaffney, SC.

Through their investigation, SCDOR agents determined Ayedh underreported taxable sales on monthly Sales Tax returns from August 2016 through December 2018. As a result, Ayedh failed to report over $870,000 in taxable sales and evaded paying approximately nearly $70,000 in in back state taxes.

If convicted, both Alexander and Ayedh face a maximum sentence of five years in prison and/or a fine of $10,000 per count.
