Deadly Upstate shooting over the weekend ruled self defense

A gathering at a home in Spartanburg Friday night turned deadly after and argument. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office publicly announced via Social Media a Long Branch Road homeowner shot a man outside the residence in self-defense.

The victim, Joshua Lee Waters of Chesnee, was found in the yard with 2 gunshot wounds according to Deputies. Watters was rendered aid until EMS arrived, but did not survive. He died in the hospital during surgery. Investigators learned everyone present inside the home had been drinking when an argument began.

Watters was asked by the homeowner to leave several times but refused. Outside, the argument continued when Watters assaulted the homeowner, who shot Watters in self-defense.

At this time the Sheriff’s Office says it does not appear that any criminal charges will levied against the homeowner as the investigation remains active.
