Gaffney Family Found Guilty in 2022 Murder of Special Needs Daughter

Gaffney Family found guilty in 2022 murder of special needs daughter.

The family of Heather Baynard, the victim, was sentenced Thursday, October 31, 2024 after a 3 day trial.

Court documents state that on April 11, 2022, family members brought a "listless and unresponsive" Heather, who suffered from cerebral palsy, to the hospital. She died that night from injuries and infections. Officials said her body showed extreme signs of disintegration.

An autopsy confirmed that Heather had been neglected "for many, many months," according to Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler.

On Thursday, Mother- Bobbie Jo Baynard and Father-David Eugene Baynard were sentenced to life in prison for murder, 20 years for infliction of great bodily injury, and 10 years for unlawful neglect. Their 3 prison sentences will run consecutively.

Heather's brother, 21 year old Edward Vincent Baynard, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for murder, with an additional 30 years for great bodily injury and unlawful neglect.

According to court records, Edward Baynard was employed by Axcess Homecare and responsible for his younger sister's care. The family lived in a home on Camp Ferry Road in Gaffney. Edward Baynard received more than $25,000 for his role as Heather's personal care and respite aid.

Solicitor Barry Barnette and Assistant Solicitor Jennifer Jordan prosecuted the case.
