Two men are dead after an altercation at a Greenville park and a confrontation with Greenville Police.
A bicyclist had called 911 just before 11AM Sunday to report he was being harassed by another man at Legacy Park. While on that call, 911 dispatchers heard gunshots, which was soon followed by several other calls to 911 reporting a gunshot victim at the park.
The cyclist died of his injuries and was identified by the Greenville County Coroner's Office as David "Whitt" Oliver.
Witnesses had given law enforcement a description of the suspect who located at the nearby Verdae Fire Station. When Police approached the vehicle, the suspect got out of the vehicle with a gun and was shot by Police.
The suspect was taken to a hospital where he died around 11:30 Sunday morning. The Coroner's Office identified the suspect as 62 year old Jeffery Mark Murray. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
Greenville Police Chief Thompson said in a media briefing yesterday afternoon both men knew each other and that the victim had named the suspect in the 911 call. No officers were injured. SLED will be investigating the shooting.
