Former Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright appeared in federal court, Monday morning. Wright is charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, obtaining controlled substances by misrepresentation and conspiracy to commit theft of publicly funded programs.
Also in court was Wright's cohorts Amos Durham and LB Watson. All three were given unsecured or cashless bonds of $25,000 each. Wright's bond comes with a condition that he attends a substance abuse program.
Wright is accused of stealing from the Sheriff's Office Benevolence Fund and using the money to buy pain pills. Wright entered an intent to plead guilty on all three federal charges.
Wright, Durham and Watson are all expected back in court this Thursday. In his plea agreement Wright will have to forfeit proceeds from his wrongdoing which is estimated to be over $450,000.
Wright faces fines and possible prison time on each charge.
