A named stretch of Highway 29 honoring a former Spartanburg County sheriff will soon be removed.

During a meeting Thursday, December 4, 2025, the South Carolina Department of Transportation committee unanimously approved a resolution to remove former Sheriff Chuck Wright’s name from a dedicated portion of Highway 29.

The decision follows Wright’s October 2025 guilty plea to multiple felony charges, including wire fraud and obtaining controlled substances.

The segment named for Wright was dedicated in 2018 and runs from I-85 to the Greer city limits.  With the commission’s vote, DOT staff will now begin removing all signage bearing Wright’s name.

Chuck Wright served as Spartanburg County sheriff for more than 20 years. He has not yet been sentenced on the charges.
