One Upstate man is finding that "funny money" is no laughing matter. The Anderson County Sheriff's Office says Shane Earl Abney has been arrested after a counterfeiting and forgery investigation that began in late December.
The Sheriff's Office says store personnel at Lowe's on Hwy 28 bypass in Anderson showed investigators surveillance video and counterfeit money, December 29th. Abney was identified as the suspect.
Over the next few weeks Abney reportedly tried to use counterfeit money at O-Reilly Auto Parts on East Shockley Ferry Road in Anderson. The Sheriff's Office claims Abney tried to return merchandise at the Clemson O-Reilly location to get cash after using counterfeit money to purchase the items.
It was determined that the merchandise was purchased with counterfeit cash. Abney was taken into custody and booked in Anderson County.
The counterfeiting case against him has now been turned over to the U.S. Secret Service.
