The City of Greenville has requested to take over a section of Haynie Street from the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

SCDOT owns the quarter-of-a-mile stretch from South Church Street to Augusta Street. The City is requesting to assume maintenance of the roadway for realignment and streetscape improvements.

“Haynie Street is an integral part of the City’s proposed road improvement project recommendations of our South Downtown transportation plan,” said Clint Link, director of Public Works. “Having ownership of the road gives us better control over a key road through the historic Haynie-Sirrine neighborhood and will allow us to implement the proposed road widening, access management, sidewalk, parking and lighting enhancements without requiring SCDOT permitting or approval.”

City Council approved the resolution to make the request March 28 and will wait for approval from SCDOT.
