A Greenville County fourth grader is facing charges after a gun was found in the student’s backpack.
A staff member at Cherrydale Elementary was told about the weapon around 10AM Tuesday.
A search of the backpack found the unloaded gun and unattached but loaded magazine.
The school was briefly on lockdown while the incident was investigated.
District officials said no threat was made and no one was injured.
The student has been charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds. They were not taken into custody, but instead were turned over to their guardian.
The State reports that there was also an incident at a Columbia area high school Tuesday, where a 17—year-old Richland Northeast High School student was arrested for possession of a weapon on school grounds as well.
The gun was discovered in a backpack as the student was going through a metal detector at the school.
The student was booked into the Alvin S Glenn Detention Center.
