Florence TV station WBTW is reporting that "the track that's too tough to tame", may be about to be part of an annexation. The City Of Darlington has notified over 100 businesses that currently outside the city limits that receive services from the municipality. They are the target of a proposed annexation, which includes the legendary Darlington Raceway.
Track officials are opposing the proposal, they cite state law that says no real property owned by a pro sports franchise can be annexed without team or organizational consent.
However, the Mayor of Darlington says there was an agreement with the track years ago, in which the track received city services with the understanding the track would be annexed in the future. That agreement expired a decade ago, but the Raceway has still received services from the City Of Darlington.
Officials say businesses and property owners affected have six months to make a decision on annexation or city services will be disconnected and discontinued.
