A state lawmaker from the Upstate is proposing a constitutional literacy test for those who seek election to public office.

Republican State Senator Josh Kimbrell of Spartanburg has proposed an amendment that would require those who seek election in the state to pass a constitutional competency test.

Kimbrell says the test would be created and scored by the University Of South Carolina Law School. The test would measure basic knowledge of both the state and U.S. constitution. Kimbrell compares such a test to license exams that exist in other career fields.

The proposed amendment calls for a referendum on the ballot that would allow voters decide whether passing the test would be a requirement to run for office.
