The Greenville Zoo closed unexpectedly Thursday, after a Amur Leopard left her enclosure. Irina, the Greenville Zoo's four-year-old Amur leopard, was found loose inside zoo grounds, Thursday morning.
Officials said at around 9:20AM, Greenville Zoo Emergency Response Teams were able to successfully tranquilize Irina. After a precautionary second injection, she was transported back to the secured leopard den for further observation. The zoo's male leopard and two cubs were said to be safely inside their exhibit, the entire time.
Officials say, there was never a danger to the public. The zoo remained closed all day Thursday, while staff conducted a full investigation.
