The potential growth of a conservative group at an Upstate high school is causing concern for a civil rights group.
The Greenville NAACP has sent a statement to the to the Greenville County School District expressing concerns that there was an interest meeting held to encourage new membership for Turning Point USA chapter at JL Mann High School.
Turning Point USA was founded by Charlie Kirk. The school has already had a Turning Point USA chapter, as do multiple Greenville County Schools. However, since Kirk's assassination there has been a groundswell of renewed interest.
The statement from the NAACP refers to Turning Point USA as a "known for promoting conservative political ideology often aligned with MAGA rhetoric."
The letter also states "Pastors and community leaders have conveyed alarm that this kind of activity can deepen divisions, sow confusion
and violate the trust we place in public schools to be safe, inclusive spaces."
The NAACP says they are investigating to see if the Turning Point Chapter is in violation of school district or state policy. The District says that the organization is within the guidelines and has existed at JL Mann for about 4 years
