A North Carolina man with a track record of violent offenses is facing murder charges after a chaotic scene developed there over the weekend.

The Robeson County Sheriff's Office says EMS workers were taking 36 year old Cheyenne Woods to the hospital when he hijacked the ambulance at gunpoint.

The suspect then crashed the ambulance into another vehicle. That's when Woods got out and shot an elderly woman, who later died.

The incident happened near the town of Maxton which is about 40 miles south of Fayetteville. Woods was arrested near the scene. He is charged with 1st degree murder, armed robbery and a list of other charges.

Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said following the tragic incident "This is yet another senseless act of murder committed by a repeat violent felon whose criminal history includes a previous murder conviction"
