The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office has announced an arrest following a reported incident at the Oconee Nuclear Station Thursday evening.
The Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Nuclear Station just after 8pm Thursday night, and deputies responded to the scene.
Once there, they learned that a white male driving a silver 2002 Toyota Camry drove through the facility's Highway 183-side gate, struck the pop-up barricades, and then backed up and drove away as plant security activated.
Then on a dirt road, the driver attempted to ram a security truck being driven by a guard before returning to Highway 183, crossing into Pickens County, and pulling into a Jones Mill Road property, where shots of unknown origin were then fired.
Authorities said the same vehicle and driver, which has an Arkansas license plate number of 380VDR, showed up at the facility roughly an hour before the incident and was asked to leave before driving off.
The Sheriff's Office has since identified 66-year-old Doyle Wayne Wisehunt as a person of interest at a press conference earlier Friday afternoon. Wisehunt is also wanted in Arkansas on drug and weapons charges.
Authorities said they also discovered the suspect vehicle abandoned in Pickens County Friday between Six Mile and Central.
Later Friday evening, the Sheriff's Office announced that Wisehunt was taken into custody in Pickens County.
Authorities are still investigating the incident. At this time, it is still unclear the motive behind Wisehunt's actions.
