A crack down in the Low Country has come after a long term investigation into cartel drug activity has led to several indictments and over two dozen arrests. Attorney General Alan Wilson announced the results of "Operation Last Stand", Monday.
The investigation targeted what they say were members of a Mexican drug cartel working with alleged Low Country based gang members to traffic drugs from Mexico to here in South Carolina. Wilson says, dozens of arrests have been made and a number of grand jury indictments have come from the investigation.
Officials claim the cartel and gang operation had a pipeline to smuggle fentanyl, meth and cocaine across the border. The investigation grew out of probes into illegal nightclubs in the Lowcountry that authorities say were linked to drug trafficking, prostitution, gang activity and violence.
Earlier this year, law enforcement made 86 arrests at an unlicensed nightclub in North Charleston. 31 people have been indicted in Operation Last Stand at this point and most of them face multiple felony charges.
