Spectrum at a press conference Tuesday presented an $11,534 donation to the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services to assist in the training and equipment of an electronics detection K-9.

The $11,534 donation was granted to the SCDPPPS through Defenders for Children with the goal of improving the agency’s ability to locate electronic evidence such as tiny micro-SD cards when searching residences of suspected child sex crime repeat offenders.

“We’re all human whether we’re agents or investigators. If we search a residence, we might miss something,” said Agent Benjy Partain, the handler of the agency’s new K-9, a yellow Lab Retriever named Chip. “An officer or an agent might not think ‘oh let me check out that can there. There might be something.’ But he can actually go up to a whole cabinet full of cans and find it and lure on that.”

Chip has been training since June to detect electronics.
